Netflix have today announced plans to launch its service in the UK and Ireland in early 2012. The company stated that the service will be supported via “a range of consumer electronics devices capable of streaming from Netflix, as well as on PCs, Macs and mobile tablets and phones.” Any firm details of pricing, supported devices and expected content will be announced closer to launch.
Netflix will be going directly up against Lovefilm in the UK and Ireland; the latter having already established a foothold in the console market (currently available on PS3 and soon to be launched on Xbox 360). However, Netflix is extremely popular in the US, and is available on a wide range of devices and consoles (Wii, PS3 and 360). It is safe to say that Netflix on these shores will be extremely competitive.
