Another Microsoft based rumour doing the rounds this morning (we’ve had quite a few of them already), this time from Inside Mobile Apps which reports that Microsoft is planning to phase out their proprietary virtual currency system, Microsoft Points by the end of the year. They claim to have information from “a source with knowledge of the Microsoft’s decision.”
They go on to state that by the end of 2012, “all transactions will be based on the region set on the purchasing account and real money will be used to purchase all Windows Phone content.” The move is seen as an attempt to mirror the purchasing practices used in the App Store and the Android Market. MS Points are currently used to purchase a variety of content on Xbox Live, the Zune Marketplace, Windows PC and Windows Phone.
When Inside Mobile Apps approached Microsoft for further comment, a spokesperson responded with the classic “we do not comment on rumours or speculation.”. XGZ have approached Microsoft regardless, and will update if we get anything different back.
