Following on from yesterday’s Inside Mobile Apps report on Microsoft’s plans to scrap the current MS Points system. Eurogamer have today reported that redeem codes will be retained for Xbox 360 purchases, while at the same time confirming aforementioned report.

Eurogamer’s source has described the move as a “profit driven decision” on Microsoft’s part. The source also reports that the company are in the process of notifying app developers. It is important to note that this is still all rumour and speculation until Microsoft release an official statement to either confirm or deny the claims. So far, we have not had any response from the company.

I believe Microsoft points are here to stay for the following two reasons: first, Microsoft does not want ditch their currency system to pay more fees that credit card companies charge for small transactions. This will hurt Microsoft’s bottom line and the shareholders will not tolerate that.

Secondly Microsoft points prevent fraud on Xbox live. Every day Xbox live was hacked by Chinese hackers. These hackers still are credit card information and then use them to buy microsoft points. these fraudulent Microsoft rates are then transferred to a bogus account which are sold on the black market.

Choppers unknowingly purchased these Microsoft points and then get banned later for possession of stolen property. If we get rid of Microsoft points then we will be forced store financial information on Xbox live.
